National Outreach
The Arab-American Resource Corps brings together Americans from all
backgrounds to promote civic engagement and economic
empowerment in Arab-American communities throughout the nation.
We inspire new leadership through a commitment to voluntary service
and hands-on activism. We strengthen our communities by working
through Arab-American grassroots organizations. And we build bridges
between the diverse communities that make up America’s rich cultural
fabric.

The mission of the national outreach department is to support the creation of a national
network of Arab-American community groups to represent and empower new
immigrants, the economically disadvantaged and the Arab-American community.  The
need for a national network of Arab-American community groups to share best practices
and resources is clear.  Demand for the services of Arab-American community groups
has increased since the events of September 11th, but these groups have been key
advocates for their communities for decades.  In addition to traditional social services and
educational programs, these groups have been speaking out on issues of immigration and
civil rights and educating the community on Arab-American history and culture.

Eleven Arab-American community centers have come together under the Arab-American
Resource Corps (ARC) to build capacity in their organizations and communities and to
address the need for increased resources, technical assistance, and networks of
communication among Arab-American community groups.

What is ARC?
ARC is a national AmeriCorps program that will place 40 AmeriCorps members in eleven
Arab-American community groups around the country for a year of service.  ARC
members will empower communities and institute change by:

Providing direct service to recent immigrants
Working with low-income families and
Mentoring and tutoring youth
In addition to the value they give to their local communities, ARC members are
part of a national organization that works to give voice to Arab Americans around
the country.

How would I serve as an ARC member?
If you are ready to make a difference with your life, serve your community and be
challenged to use your skills and talents to empower the Arab-American community, then
ARC is looking for you.  ARC members will serve the community and build Arab-
American community groups through three service areas: direct social services,
immigrant orientation and cultural outreach.

Social Services
Members engaged in direct social services will serve in one of three areas: youth
development, social services outreach and social services education.

Youth development – Members will work with Arab-American and other youth to
expand after-school and summer programs and provide one-on-one mentoring,
homework assistance and organized group activities.
Social services outreach – Members provide direct one-on-one assistance to Arab-
Americans in need and conduct outreach in the community to make more people
aware of the services that are offered.
Social services education – Members conduct workshops on health and parenting
to help Arab-American families access the resources and information they need to
empower their family.

Immigrant Orientation
In addition to social services, several members help immigrants transition to life in the
United States through:

Workshops on services and resources available to them
One-on-one assistance to recent immigrants

Cultural Outreach
The third area of service members engage in is cultural outreach
through education and research.

Cultural outreach education – Members conduct educational workshops on Arab-
American history and culture in schools, local government, law enforcement
agencies, and other communities groups.
Cultural outreach research – Members carry out research on Arab-American
demographics, history and culture to be used by other Arab-American community
groups in their education campaigns.
